Electronystagmography (ENG)

The eyes are closely linked to the inner ear. Together, they enable good balance and clear vision.

Electronystagmography (ENG) is a series of tests that are administered to people who are experiencing dizziness or balance disorders. The tests evaluate balance by detecting eye movements while imposing various stresses on the subject’s balance.

During ENG, eye movements are recorded with small electrodes placed on the skin around the eyes. Eye movements also may be recorded by videonystagmography (VNG), using an infrared video camera mounted inside goggles that the subject wears.
